Exercise One - Thinking about the Aims influencing the design of your Research Proposal
In this exercise we had to find a partner and read aloud our statements from Week One's blog then locate keywords and techniques we use in our making. The keywords found in my statement were things like Iterative Design Processes, Art Gallery, Fun, Play, Game Design, (and although it wasn't mentioned, it was alluded to) User-Focused Approaches. Other keywords not mentioned but still apply are Virtual Reality, Interaction, and Player Experience.
Similarly to the above, the two methods I use constantly are Iterative Design Processes (constant creation) and User-Focused Approaches (where I want to evoke/generate play).
These methods relate to the keywords as there is a need for constant ideation to maximize the output but also define what is necessary, so, for example, I need to produce multiple concepts before settling on what to use for a room within the Art Gallery.
This lesson was on Aims, how important they are but also how they can change with progress. The aims can be brief and direct because they address the purpose of our research. It can also refer to the methods we will be using in our exploration. We need five keywords to highlight what we want our aims to be like; my five words are Virtual Reality, Unreal Engine, Interaction, Play, and Art Galleries.
Some aim examples are:
To explore how interaction alters the way people view art in galleries.
To understand how Virtual Reality changes how we generate play when only using two senses.
Self-Directed Exercise:
Above (in the first paragraph) there are keywords taken from a previous statement. These keywords, again, are Iterative Design Processes (method one), Art Gallery, Fun, Play, Game Design, and User-Focused Approaches (method two).
The two methods can influence the direction of my work as one is the constant making and thinking about concepts or ideation, and the other gains feedback by involving users. By using the two together I can create the feedback loop that will keep my research progressing. Other methods I use are prototyping or whiteboxing, and playtesting. Playtesting is similar to a feedback loop and user-focused approaches. Prototyping just being the earlier stages of making a game/piece. Aiding the development of idea generation is continuous iteration and prototyping, it is a space that allows focus and refinement after concepts.
