While in the grand scheme of this semester it is week seven, for our new elective I will just call it week one, as that is what it is for this class.
Design Practice II is very similar to DPr1, where it is hands-on practical work and reflection, moving into another method. This class uses food pun and analogies to set the tasks for the week (hence this task being "Raiding the pantry").
In our first class, we had the introduction to DPr2 and what we could expect to do/accomplish in this class. This took up most of the lesson.
The rest of the lesson was taken up with what we were to do outside of class, which was to create 51 artefacts.
Broken down into sections, these artefacts were done by what time you should complete them in, it was as below:
5 minutes x 12 artefacts (1 hour)
10 minutes x 12 artefacts (2 hours)
15 minutes x 12 artefacts (3 hours)
30 minutes x 12 artefacts (6 hours)
1 hour x 3 artefacts (3 hours)
The total amount of time was 15 hours, plus 6 hours' worth of documentation. This is to get us into the continuous creative mindset, exhausting avenues to generating more free-thinking in terms of our designs. What the exercise has to be based around is our research questions and three words chosen from a small matrix of words/ingredients. The words I chose were Standardized, Solid, and Ephemeral.
The meaning of each word is as follows:
Standardized - Cause something to conform to a standard. Adopt ___ as one's standard. Compare to a standard.
Solid - Firm and stable in shape. Made of strong materials. Having 3 Dimensions (being 3D). Not hollow. Dependable. On good terms with. Severe or Unfair.
Ephemeral - Lasting a very short time. Short life cycle.
There were several constraints, the times above being some, another was the scale. This meant that we were restricted to a certain size and that was the size of a postcard, or A6 (140 x 105mm).
I gave each section its own theme depending on the keywords. For the first section (5 mins) it was Ephemeral, (10 mins) Standardized, (15 mins) Solid, (30 mins) Standardized and Ephemeral, and (1 hour) Standardized and Solid. By separating what they had to contain I didn't exhaust too much of one idea in the time brackets but I did have items with commonalities all throughout.
