Feedback from Peers:
- Liked the use of a black space at the beginning
- The added narration in the black space creates strangeness because of its lack of context
- Use of Pūrākau adds more depth to the game
- Pick a story from Pūrākau to see how it can/will shape the project
Reflection:
Looking at the feedback I am keen to continue on with the black/blank start and narration as it somewhat symbolizes the Māori version of creation (where it started from nothing, then the endless night was created, and from that then the world was made). I would take this a step further if I could and have the start then use a portal (or teleportation) to get to the next area (landscape). With having a story to create from I imagine that more ideas could be generated around the appearance and how you move through it.
The stories I have as an example of areas to pursue are:
(Excerpts from) the Prologue - Whiti Hereaka
Te Pō - Patricia Grace
Kurungaituku - Ngahuia Te Awekotuku
Niwareka and Mataora - Witi Ihimaera
Portfolio Planning:
For the portfolio and final set of artefacts I am remaking what I showed this week, incorporating more from Pūrākau, and getting all the artefacts I need/want to in this level. This time I should be able to have it in both 3rd Person POV and VR.
Similar to last week I will be creating a landscape, I have found the stories I plan to use for the level, and there are some sounds I have already. Things I need to create are:
Shapes - Zbrush
Textures - (Will be found in) Megascans
Strangeness - Unreal; Movement, Teleportation, etc.
More Sound - Ambience, Footsteps(?)
Particle Effects - In shape/Shape "Texture"
Porting will be alright for 3rd Person.
(New) Research Question:
How might VR technology employ a te Ao Māori pūrākau worldview in order to educate [post-school leavers] by exploring strangeness through interaction and meaningful play?

Artefact(s):
Something that I noticed (that I initially counted as a failure of sorts) was that in the above videos you can see as sort of black mist around the character. This is actually the shadows in game. While it is weird and somewhat game breaking it is also cool and adds to strangeness in a new way. I will be looking into whether this is a bug or if the textures are just missing LODs (Level Of Detail).
