Supervisor Meeting Notes

The second meeting regarding the ethics forms, this time with Nova.

We had trouble sharing the file as I was on two devices (phone and desktop) and neither were the file's native device. This took up a good amount of time (10 minutes or so) but we found a way around it.


Much like how the previous session with Greg had gone, I started with the research title/question again. The question is still relatively the same for now as it wasn't the main focus but the title has somewhat changed. Previously it was Moving Through Strangeness: Immersion into Te Ao Māori via Virtual Reality and while it fit it wasn't quite what I am looking at within my project. Nova did like the start of the title, however. The concept of moving through [something] can be the idea of an action, it can be the VR space, it can be the idea of te ao Māori and being Māori. So temporarily it became something akin to Moving Through Māori Pūrākau in VR Environments to Engage with...

Something that was brought up was that I (potentially and subconsciously) was drawn to queer spaces or transitional spaces. This stemmed from my collection and interpretation of the story of Hatupatu and Kurungaituku and the original story that lead me to want to visualize it (Kurungaituku by Ngahuia Te Awekotuku). So my project was a VR response to Indigenous and Queer Spaces/Ecologies. This is where the strangeness kind of lay as it was the movement between two spaces. So the next iteration of the title became Moving Through Strangeness: Using Virtual Reality as an Immersive Environment to Inhabit Pūrākau mo te ao Māori.


There is a small page of notes that, while I didn't label where it would fit, I believe they would be to do with B.9. some of these notes are just that, partially written bits and pieces that I could throw together to make something or at least have an idea of.

- [Verradia], the primary researcher, is creating a VR environment to visualize specifically the pūrākau of Hatupatu and Kurungaituku.

- [My whānau] have a direct whakapapa connection to the story through the collection of oral histories and stories.

- [I am] taking these stories to weave into an immersive environment response.

To do with my research question - How can I take these stories into VR?

- How can VR extend on the pūrākau traditions?


Section B.10. to B.13.

- Benefits: A degree. Shifting from the oral traditions into a VR response. Remote accessibility/accessible pūrākau for tipuna. To honor my uncle's commitment to maintaining whakapapa. VR as a repository, holding the whakapapa. Community is my whānau and people who use VR (those who have access to VR).

- B.12. Have a look at the wānanga process. Collection via GoPro Max, audio and visual. Potentially recording material while on a walk, following the Hikoi te Whenua framework (look it up)

- B.13. Transcripts. Put down the obvious stuff (methodologies). [Go for hikoi]. "Through artistic methods, I will take/use this as a foundation for my practice..." Whakapapa whānaungatanga, that it is a whānau project.


Section D.

- "This is a kaupapa Māori project and as such Tikanga Māori and Pūrākau are central to my project"

- "This ethics application...* is to honor my whakapapa" *I missed the chance to write what was in between application and is.

I should look further into Ngahuia Te Awekotuku - Central Figures and look into the stories again.


It was suggested that I leave the playtesting idea behind (where I take it back to my family and get them to play and give feedback on the game/experience) as I won't have enough time for it. It is something to consider for a future PhD or for after my Master's is over.
